Members of 25 peaceful anti-war organizations hold a demonstration to urge the United States to end Iraq War in front of the U.S. Embassy in Seoul on March 20. They wear hijab, the traditional Muslim dress for women that covers all but the head, hands and feet, and hold chrysanthemums to express their solidarity with the Iraqi people.

  1. Certainly a dramatic photo which does well to ensure that the demonstrators get attention. Good media publicity strategy. But I wonder if the demonstrators realised that Hijab is regarded as a very oppressive dress imposed by mainly fundamentalist and conservative Muslim men upon Muslim women? The Taliban in Afghanistan used it to ensure women remained completely subservient to men, bereft of any individual identity except one that is defined by men. Hijab is a reflection of how women continue to be oppressed under a system of “religious" laws. Hijab horribly violates women’s human rights. Watch these movies “Osama" and “Kandahar" to get an idea. Hijab and religious laws are imposed upon Muslim women around the world in varying degrees of severity. Muslim feminists do not condone the Hijab not only for the dress (which is unattractive) but also for the laws that underpin the ideas and practice of Hijab. It institutionalises women’s oppression in the Muslim world.

  2. Yes, though it indeed gets some public attractions(and following leads the April 4 demon), we still need to recognize that such strategy could slide into mainstream stereotyping…; However, thanks for your comment that it points out the inter-loci gap we shld notice: it interestingly represents the dilemma of out-of-context local supporters’ strategy to convey messages to the nationals for other countries’ and international issues.
